Bob from East Haven, CT tells me,

“You can’t have a website about kit cars without a Laser 917!”

As a fellow Laser 917 (a rather dune buggy-esque Porsche 917 replica) enthusiast and owner, I have to agree with Bob. His red beauty is a Quint Industries kit he picked up in 2003, onto which he’s added West Coast Core’s2378 cc Type I engine and their pro street tranny, so it’s as not lying when it looks fast. Check it out:

The good news is I’m going to share with you some pictures of Rick’s old Kelmark GT from when he first got it… but you’re going to have to wait for a full feature on his wild Brubaker Box.

The bad news is that I’m going to be out of town for the weekend, so don’t expect any posts until probably Tuesday. However, if you’re bored, you may want to check out Jon’s blog about dune buggies from La Paz, Mexico since it’s sort of related in theme (and he wrote the template and set up the software for this blog, which is also based on his fishing blog).

Oh, and remember — to submit your car, just email your story and pictures to toys@priceofhistoys.com. If the car is for sale, include the relevant details…. And either way, the more you tell me the better!

This is actually a very similar looking Kellison Astra GT — not an Aztec. When the car sold in 1966 (emulating GT40 styling in part), it was advertised as having a twelve hour build time using only basic hand tools.

  • Take off VW steering wheel and other simple components
  • Unscrew the bolts holding down the VW body and have a friend help you lift it off.
  • Swap the seats and other components.
  • Have a friend help drop the Kellison body in place (this can all be done by hand) and bolt it on.
  • Apply the lights and finishing touches, and you’re done.

Ha, kit cars these days? Way too confusing!

God, I love Manta Mirages. He sold it in 1998 as far as I know (I think in the $25,000 range, which is where a top-end Manta seems to sit) to work on a new toy.

This is actually a factory car — built by the factory in 1985 (although it’s titled as a 1972 in MA), with the killer driveline installed professionally as well (a 350 with loads of goodies plus a four carb setup recently added)… Very fun, very fast car.

Jim found this partial kit bured in a junkyard in Maryland, sitting on a VW chassis. Asking price was $500, so Jim wanted to know what it was… It seems to be a FiberFab Jamaican. Edit/Oops: No, it’s an Amante GT!

To put that a little more into context, here’s John’s very in-progress Jamaican. His was built around a Karman-Ghia chassis with a tube chassis laid over top of it. I actually think he’s sold it since, but in these photos he’s about $4000 into the project. I wish I had a better set of photos of a Jamaican to show you today — it’s a beautiful, classy and ahead-of-its time car.

In order to raise money for the The Haven of Rest in Michigan, a supporter donated this sweet (and very “stock” looking) FiberFab Aztec 7 kit car. Very cool… but I have to wonder if it’s the old (and sexist, given that I met my first wife through our mutual interest in kit cars) cliche of the wife forcing the sale, because I’m guessing some real time went into this.

Long ago Jim D. bought this first generation Aztec from a friend. This is a picture of it back in 1976. He’s asked me to try and help him find other pictures of Aztecs of this era, so if you have some email them to me, and I’ll try and dig some more of from my archives (I recently posted Eric’s Aztec GT).

I remember when I was in highschool and desperately wanted my first kit car, my father and I nearly bought one of these, although the owner had build a V8 chassis for it rather than a VW based one.
