I’ve always thought that one of the greats of American indie car design was the Kellison series of sportscars. Jim LoDoco’s (I think since sold) Kellison J-6 is a great example. Built on a modified 102″ wheelbase 1961 Corvette chassis (350 V8/auto), I think it eventually left his garage for a meager $25k about five years ago. It qualifies as a vintage racer (and is California registered 1963 SPCNS), and is the second one he built, having crashed the first one at over 175kph.
