Well this is an odd project! This Fiberfab Avenger started life as the version that they offered for the Corvair driveline, but one of the recent owners cut all that out and grafted in the front and rear from a Jaguar XJ6 (and cut out the floor), with the intention of running a 500 CI Caddilac V8 up front… Doesn’t seem like a good idea to me, nor did it seem like a good idea to Eugene, who bought the project as you see it now.
His plan was to use the XJ6 components as a fasttrack to setting up an electric vehicle, but he hasn’t had time to work on it and has decided to sell it. It’s essentially a rolling body right now. He’s located in Goldsboro, North Carolina and you can reach him at partsfreak125@yahoo.com. He’s asking $2,000 or “interesting trades”.
This Fiberfab Aztec 7B is being listed in Helena, Montana for $2,500 (with all fair offers considered) and rides on a VW pan with an aluminum Buick 215 V8 mated to the VW transmission. The bad news is that the windshield (a valuable commodity since it comes from a Lamborghini Muira) has a hole knocked in it. If you’d like to make Shane an offer you can write him at Wbadcat69@bresnan.net.
I’ve always thought of the Fiberfab Bonito as the “gentleman’s GT40″… a more elegant replica of the GT40 than spot-on replicas or the macho Avengers. Darren in Yorkshire, UK has his up for sale. He’s owned it for about twenty years, putting in £2000 last year to put in a 2L engine (it’s on a VW chassis with disc brakes all around). As far as I know he’s the second owner, with the original builder spending about £6500 to complete it. It needs to be painted, but other than that it’s a solid car.
If you’re interested, drop him a line at darren.r.collins@hotmail.co.uk. As well as straight sale he’s open to interesting car and motorcycle trades.
The Bonito was built in the seventies by Fiberfab Germany (so you’ll only usually find these in Europe), one of the few exotic kits of this type to fit four passengers. About a thousand were made until production ended in 1978, and probably only about fifty are currently complete and on the road. Windshield and lights were out of a Ford 12M P6, and the rear window came from a Opel Record C. The last few pictures here are from the assembly manual, which is still available care of FF Germany.
Tanya has posted a giant set of VW-related vehicles to her Flikr set, all for sale for her father Robert (click the link for his number). The set includes a Gazella, and MG, a Beetle with square-light widebody fenders, a dunebuggy, a Thing, and more, including this very very dirty first-gen Fiberfab Aztec 7… Given its state of cleanliness, at first glance it looks very recoverable and solid. It’s located in Florida if you’d like to go check it out.
Seth has what I think is one of the nicest, cleanest looking Fiberfab Aztec 7’s on the market, and it’s currently up for sale in a no-reserve eBay auction (#250261020174). His car is located in Lynchburg, VA, and the auction is currently at a mere $761 (it ends next Wednesday). If I was going to bid on an Aztec 7, this one would definitely be getting my attention, and I think whoever gets this will be quite happy. Personally I think this one is worth somewhere in the $10,000 range.

As I mentioned, this example looks super-clean with a nice by-the-book finish on the car, although they’ve fixed what I think is the design’s one Achilles heel, the ultra-ugly and somewhat immense light pods (check them out on the Aztec 7 a few entries down from this one). His headlights have been relocated to the tip of the nose. It hasn’t driven since 2002 — this is another “barn find” — but it seems to be a pretty solid example and I can’t imagine it would take much time or money to get it into a daily driver state. It’s registered as a “1992 Reconstruction”, so it’s got a nice kitcar title rather than just being registered as a Beetle.
Continue reading after the break for a big gallery of pictures of the car.
Dave recently sold his Aztec GT (to a guy that builds tube racing chassis, so maybe we’ll see something exciting), and sent in some pictures of his other projects, including his blue Avenger that he drove from TN to Carlisle for the annual kit car show, and his white Aztec 7 that he drove to Indy for the kit car Run and Gun — perfectly capable of keeping up with the Cobras. He’s now putting together another Aztec 7, which he may build around a VW fuel injection system of his own design — 50+ mpg with any luck.
I just realized that I have a ton of photos that were on this site before I converted to a blog setup, and will try and get those re-added over the next couple weeks. For starters here’s the collection of Avengers that were at Carlisle in 1999.
