Dave’s Other Cars

Dave recently sold his Aztec GT (to a guy that builds tube racing chassis, so maybe we’ll see something exciting), and sent in some pictures of his other projects, including his blue Avenger that he drove from TN to Carlisle for the annual kit car show, and his white Aztec 7 that he drove to Indy for the kit car Run and Gun — perfectly capable of keeping up with the Cobras. He’s now putting together another Aztec 7, which he may build around a VW fuel injection system of his own design — 50+ mpg with any luck.

Laser 917A For Sale

R Grant’s got this turquoise metalflake Laser 917 Kit (one of the early A-series cars — you can tell because it doesn’t have roll-under front or side panels, and has no quarter windows) on a 1966 VW Beetle pan and a late ‘65 engine. The body is currently off the car but it’s a very simple and quick process to remount it (basically you just bolt it back on). He says runs great and has many new components. He’s located in Milford, Ohio and is asking $3200 — you can email him at rgrant8816@zoomtown.com.

Sebring (Sterling) Kit Car

After sitting in a warehouse, running but without the final touches to make this car everything it could be, Robert — who says “I always wanted a V8 in a kit car, but with gas at $4 a gallon, the four-cylinder mileage is a luxury!” — decided to sell his Sebring (a variation on the Sterling). With only a day left in the auction (#130229120294), it’s sitting at an economical $3,050. As a trivia-note, as you can see from the side profile (last photo), this Sebring is running drop floors to give a little more headroom to taller drivers, a necessity for all but Leprechauns in this very sleek car.

“Excuse the pictures — they were taken in a warehouse with no lights on.”

Consulier GTP

I’m not sure if this Consulier GTP, photographed at Carlisle ‘99, is right for this blog, as it’s sort of half way between kit car and limited production run vehicle (around fifty were made I think), but it’s a fiberglass car on a chassis cobbled together with bits from various vehicles — including a 2.2L four cylinder engine from a K-car. I remember their “$25,000 challenge” (later upped to $100,000) advertisements in the backs of all the kit car magazines of the time, in which Warren Mosler, head of the company, promised to pay the cash to anyone who could post a better lap time in a production car than what the GTP could do. The car’s performance was good, with a 5.2 second 0-60 time and a top speed approaching 150mph, but in the end, a stock ‘91 Corvette was able to post a better time (which was disputed by GTP, as it had previously dominated top performers like the Ruf Porsche).

Ultimately the Consulier GTP, which Mosler described as “designed by the stopwatch” to excuse it’s award-winning ugliness (Time called it one of the “50 worst cars of all time”, on looks alone), was phased out — in part due to bad press — and Mosler now makes the also high performance but quite a bit more beautiful MT900 series, although GTP owners claim that it’s still the best performing vehicle in the Mosler/Consulier family.

Lancia Stratos Kit Car

One of the first and most asked about kit cars I ever posted was this gorgeous Lancia Stratos replica which was for sale here in Toronto. It was built around a genuine Ferrari V8 (255 HP, out of a 308). Built in England on a full tube chassis (total vehicle weight 1650 lbs with a very close-to-original fiberglass and aluminum body), large Brembo brakes, wishbone suspension, Esparo seats and five point harnesses, it was described as “very quick” (no sh*t, Shelock), and ready for both street use and racing. Asking price at the time was $33k, and at a time when the US dollar made that about $22k US, it sold quickly. I’d looked at it, but unfortunately at 6′2″ (and at the time, a rather portly build), I didn’t fit.

Fiberfab Avenger GT Meet-Up

I just realized that I have a ton of photos that were on this site before I converted to a blog setup, and will try and get those re-added over the next couple weeks. For starters here’s the collection of Avengers that were at Carlisle in 1999.

Red Avenger For Sale

Adam in Sacramento, California is selling this red ‘72 Avenger for $6,000 OBO. It’s built on a VW chassis with a ‘65 Corvair Turbo Spider driveline, updated Pertronics ignition and a Kevlar clutch, and the whole car has been rewired. The interior has Corbeau GTA low back seats, and it has new power windows and remote door poppers. The car needs minor attention but “runs and drives well” — contact Adam at amenscat@hotmail.com.
